With AC Casinos Closed, B.J. Novak Can't Win Back His Losses
You've likely heard about how all the casinos in Atlantic City are closed because of a budget stalemate between New Jersey's Democratic governor Jon Corzine and his fellow Democrats in the state legislature. To sum it up, Corzine wants to raise the state sale tax from 6 percent to 7 percent to close a $4.5 billion state budget gap, while lawmakers oppose the tax increase, saying it would cost the average New Jersey family $275 per year, which is about what the average New Jersey family spends on lottery tickets and Pall Malls each month. Since New Jersey doesn't have a budget, it can't pay state employees like the casino inspectors who are required to keep tab of the casinos' riches. Thus casinos are closed until these inspectors are back on the job. Thus the state is losing out on $1.3 million each day from the 8 percent cut it takes from the casinos.
We could say more about inept politicians and what a crap hole New Jersey is...but let's just leave it at that. Politicians are inept and New Jersey is a crap hole. What's really important here though is to think about the people who are truly affected by the budget impasse.
No, we're not talking about casino employees and rich people like that. We're talking about people like B.J. Novak who was down $1200 after an all nighter at the Trump Plaza, stepped out for a bite to eat and wasn't let back in because of the shut down.
Now poor B.J. can't win back the $1200 he lost.
Here's how B.J. told the story to The Washington Post, which is pretty much what we just said:
"I've been here all night. I just left to get some food and came back but I guess I didn't make it. I'm down about 1,200 bucks, now they're going to be closed for good so I'm not sure what I'm going to do."
Heartbreaking we know. Completely tragic. A crying shame. And if these politicians don't get their shit together soon thousands of B.J. Novaks from all over the Tri-State area won't be able to win back the thousands they've lost to the casinos. So we urge all our readers from the crap hole state of New Jersey to, one, forgive us for calling your state a crap hole and, two, get involved and write your state legislators and governor and remind them about people like B.J. Novak who need to get back in the casinos to win back their losses.
If you want to read more about the casino shut down, you can do so here, here and here.
