Gavin Smith Wins FTOPS Event #7; FTOPS Missing Many Guarantees
As you know, we typically don't report on online tournaments or live prelims unless something noteworthy happens.
So when FTP pro Gavin Smith, who is notably and admittedly not much of an online tourney player, wins a FTOPS event, it warrants mention.
Smith took down FTOPS Event #7 ($100 no-limit hold'em with rebuys), beating a field of 1,806 to bank $123,600.
Also warranting a mention is that this edition of the FTOPS is seriously missing its guaranteed marks. Whether it's The EconomyTM, poor marketing, over-saturation, or some other factor, it seems like the FTOPS has lost some of its luster.
Read a good breakdown of the FTOPS missing its mark at the Poker-King here.
At least someone picked G Smith to win the whole damn thing!

RE shamrockbaby:
With this being their first MiniFTOPS I imagine someone was sitting in an office throwing darts to come up with some guess for their guarantees. No frame of reference.
I do think the middle of the road bankrolls are going to the Mini's instead of taking shots at the main FTOPS events.

It's easy to "crush" guarantees: just set them artificially low. pokerstars is famous for this. they do it deliberately to make it appear they are hugely popular. Don't get me wrong, they are a popular site, but their guarantees, now, and have always been, a joke. At least fulltilt is trying to be somewhat honest in having you think there is a possible overlay. Look at pokerstars when they guarantee $250,000 on a NLHE mtt and the prize pool is $500 K. Sorta meaningless correct?

In my completely uninformed opinion, I think the main FTOPS are coming up short on the guarantee because of the MiniFTOPS events. The middle of the road bankrolls are flocking to them, they have crushed every guarantee so far.

When you write "the FTOPS is seriously missing its guaranteed marks"
Do you mean that there is an overlay, or that they are not living up to their end of the bargain?
