Liv Boeree, Maria Ho and Some Other Girls Playing Poker at the 2008 WSOP, Plus an Update

Liv BoereeMaria Ho

Above is head-banging poker hottie Liv Boeree and the last chick standing at the 2007 WSOP Main Event Maria Ho playing at the 2008 World Series of Poker. Liv, a woman, was in the field yesterday for Event No. 2 - $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em and mentioned that she "went deep and got it in ahead and that's what matters." So we guess that means she's out. Maria Ho, also a woman, is playing today in Event No. 4 - $5k Mixed Hold'em.

Updating you on the action from the floor of the WSOP, there are three events underway today at the Rio, including Day 2 of the $1,500 NLH event. 180 players remain from the nearly 4000 who started Event No. 2 and Ginikachukwu Izuogu (<- no way that's a real name) is out front with 305,000 in chips, David Bach (6th at 2007 LAPC) is in second with 288,000 in chips and Ryan D'Angelo is third with 237,000. Notables still in include Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Theo Tran, Kenny Tran, Shaniac, Aaron Kanter, Arnold Spee, and Terrence Chan. They have to play down to the final 9 before action stops so we're guessing they'll still be going when we wake up tomorrow afternoon.

Both Event No. 3 ($1,500 Pot Limit Hold'em) and Event No. 4 ($5k Mixed Hold'em) started today with the former drawing a decent 713 entrants and already down to 198. David Singer leads the pro heavy field last we checked. Get the latest chip counts here.

Event No. 4 was the late start today and had 333 players enter, with most of the field consisting of players who busted early from Event No. 3. Brit pro Ben Grundy holds the early chip lead with 32,000, and big names over 20k in chips already include Bill Chen, Ralph Perry, Bill Edler, Berry Johnston, Eric Froelich, and Phil Ivey.

Okay, this is really tiring. Time for a nap.

Edler at It Again, Among Chip Leaders at WPT Foxwoods World Poker Finals

WptlogoPretty sure we can all agree that Bill Edler is having one helluva year. He's won more money than any non-WSOP-ME-final-table-ist on tour this year. He won his first WPT title in September at the Gulf Coast Poker Championship. Before that, he won his first WSOP bracelet in the $5,000 buy-in NLH short-handed event. And he started the year off with a win at the First Annual Heads Up Championship.

Edler ended Day 1a play at the Foxwoods World Poker Finals third overall in chips, stacked at 109,450. He trails Michael Farris (157,750). Other notable bigs include Kevin Saul (99,325), Tuan Le (98,400), and Roy Winston (94,450).

Bill Edler Is A Pretty Good Poker Player

Wptlogo_2First off, did the Entities who comprise Wicked Chops Poker lose a war this weekend or something? With all of this poker going on, we've barely been away from our laptops. No yachting. No leisurely drives through the wine country. No morning sex with the wives. It's what we imagine life to be like in China every day.

One person who would probably like that kind of oppressive, stifling lifestyle is China-lovin' Steve Lipscomb, whose World Poker Tour just crowned a new champion. That, our friends, is what we like to call a helluva "segue."

The new WPT champ is noted all-around-great-guy Bill Edler. "The Great One" or "The American Dream" or whatever everyone calls him (always forget) captured his first WPT crown (to go along with his first bracelet back in June) by taking down the Gulf Coast Championship in Biloxi. For the win, Edler banks $747,615. Edler now is second overall in the Card Player POY standings, trailing only David "The Dragon" Pham*.

Edler defeated David Robbins heads-up for the title. Robbins will bring home $411,185. Hank Sitton finished third ($210,265), John Davidson fourth ($163,540), Tim Frazin fifth ($140,177), and The Notorious POB Tom Franklin sixth ($116,814).

For the story on Edler's miraculous come back today after being down to just 2k in chips with 17 players remaining, watch Kimberly Lansing's video interview with the new WPT champ.

Many U.S. Americans Not In Europe for the WSOP Probably Because Biloxi Is So Much Nicer Than London

2jc_2Over 250 runners showed up for the WPT Gulf Coast Championship poker tournament at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi. Because seriously, why wouldn't they? When we first read the Bible, and it described Eden, we were like, "Waaaaaaiiiit a minute. This Eden place sure does sound an awful lot like Biloxi, Mississippi. Heaven on Earth, that place."

Anyway, Day 2 play started a little while ago at the WPT Gulf Coast Championship, with Bill Edler as the chip leader, stacked around 120,000.

Other notables in contention include the spectacularly breasted J.C. Tran (at right), Vanessa Rousso, who is from Duke, Mark Seif, and T.J. Cloutier.

Another Pro Goes Down

One of the most respected no limit cash game players in the world and man who claimed Carmel Petresco for arm-candy, Daniel Alaei has just busted from the 2007 WSOP Main Event.

Alaei was eliminated in 25th place, banking $333,490.

This leaves three big name pros: Bill Edler, Lee Watkinson, and Scotty Nguyen, as well as Kenny Tran (5th place finisher in this year's $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event).

FIVE MINUTES LATER UPDATE: Bill Edler busted in 23rd place.
